Most Coast homes have a switchboard problem they don’t know about

Open the box on a house built before about 1990 and you will usually find ceramic rewireable fuses, or circuit breakers with no safety switch behind them. It works right up until it doesn’t.

A fuse protects the wiring. A safety switch protects the person — it trips in well under a second when current starts going somewhere it shouldn’t, like through someone standing on a wet slab. They are different jobs, and the older board only does the first one.

The other thing an old board does is quietly block everything else. No spare ways for an air-conditioner, no room for a solar or battery circuit, nowhere to land an EV charger. It is the single most common reason a job gets bigger than the customer expected, which is why we look at it before quoting anything else.

We will tell you straight if your board is fine. Plenty are — and a board that has already been upgraded once does not need doing again because someone said so.

What we take on

General electrical, done once

Switchboard upgrades

Old ceramic fuses out, a proper board with RCBOs in. Usually a day, including the Energex paperwork.

Safety switches

Most older boards protect one or two circuits, or none. We check what is actually covered before quoting.

Fault-finding

Breaker tripping, half the house dead, something that smells hot. We find it rather than replacing parts until it stops.

Power and lighting

Extra points, downlights, switching, and the circuits a renovation actually needs.

Fans and air-con

Ceiling fans, dedicated air-conditioning circuits, and the board capacity to run them without nuisance tripping.

Renovations and new builds

Rough-in and fit-off, kitchen and bathroom circuits, and the certificate your building surveyor wants.

Three-phase and machinery

Supply upgrades, machine circuits, motor control, pumps, workshop and rural gear.

LED strip and feature lighting

Under-cabinet, stair, cove, deck and pool surrounds. Driver sizing and dimming done properly, not tape light that flickers within a year.

Floodlights and security

Sensor floods, camera and gate power, driveway and shed lighting — aimed to light your yard rather than the neighbours bedroom.

Smart home retrofit

Switches, sensors, blinds, gates and lighting pulled into one system, retrofitted into a house that is already built and lived in.

Automation that runs itself

Not just an app you have to remember to open. We write and test the automations — lighting, climate, pumps, gates, alerts — so the house does it on its own.

Hot water timing

Usually the biggest single load in the house, and usually running at 2am on grid power. A timer and contactor shift it into the middle of the day so your own solar heats it instead. An element takes a short high-power burst; a heat pump uses about a third of the energy but needs a long uninterrupted run, so the window gets set differently. Either way it is cheaper than adding panels.

Storm damage and faults

Power out, water through a board, a tree through the mains. We make it safe first, then sort the repair.

How we quote

A price before we start, not a number at the end

Small jobs get a fixed price over the phone or off a photo. Bigger ones get a look first. Either way you know the number before anyone picks up a tool.

Fault-finding is the exception, because nobody can price a fault they have not found yet. We charge for the time it takes to find it, tell you what it will cost to fix before we fix it, and you decide from there.

We would rather lose a job than sell you one you didn’t need. If the cheap fix will hold, we will say so — the money is in being the bloke people ring for twenty years, not in one oversized quote.
